Early Life
Hikari Tomizawa was born in Osaka-shi, Osaka, Japan on October 18th, 1991. His father left the family when Hikari was just six years old, and he remained absent for the rest of his childhood, leaving him to be raised by a single mother, and eventual step-father that he wasn't too fond of.Hikari spent his formative years getting into trouble at school quite often for being the class clown and just an all-around troublemaker. He was given detention and even suspended semi-frequently during his time in secondary school, as he tended to get into a lot of fights with other students for being such an agitator. In his early teenage years, Tomizawa discovered a love for Japanese idols, which would soon lead him to a love of professional wrestling through the joshi promotion Ice Ribbon. He fell in love with the blend of cute idol culture and fighting, capturing his heart and leading him to discover more professional wrestling outside of joshi.Tomizawa got his first job at sixteen, where he worked as a cook at an udon restaurant. He planned to save up most of the money that he earned from the job to move to Tokyo and pursue professional wrestling straight after he graduated from high school.New Japan Pro-Wrestling (2010-2013)
After training in their dojo throughout 2010, Hikari Tomizawa made his professional wrestling debut as a young lion for the country's biggest promotion, New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW) at NEVER.1 on August 24th, 2010, where he was defeated by Taishi Takizawa. For the formative years of his career, Tomizawa competed predominantly in multi-man tag team matches or singles bouts against his fellow young lions, during which he would develop a competitive rivalry with his classmate, Hiromu Takahashi. In October 2012, just over two years after his debut, it was revealed on NJPW's website that Tomizawa had been indefinitely suspended due to behavioural issues and substance abuse problems. Tomizawa was quiet about the entire situation, until it was announced on January 6th, 2013 that Hikari Tomizawa had been let go from his NJPW contract following a lack of improvement with his issues.Independent Circuit (2013-2014)
Following his abrupt release from NJPW, Tomizawa would break his silence in a Tokyo Sports interview a few weeks later. He discussed his several disagreements with management and his trainers, and also took full responsibility for the circumstances of his suspension, showing growth after the situation. He also announced that he was moving away from Tokyo and returning home to Osaka.Following the interview, Tomizawa made his first appearance outside of NJPW on February 24th, 2013 at Osaka Pro Wrestling's Osaka Holiday Paradise event, where he defeated Katsumi Oribe. He competed primarily in Osaka Pro Wrestling for the next several months, eventually teaming up with Tadasuke to capture the OPW Tag Team Championship on May 19th.The pairing successfully defended the championship until losing to The Big Guns on October 27th. Shortly following his defeat, Tomizawa challenged Tigers Mask for the OPW Owari Championship, defeating him on November 2nd. He would only hold the championship for fourteen days before losing the title back to Tigers Mask on November 16th.After losing the title, Tomizawa saw his work expand to other independent promotions throughout 2014, including Michinoku Pro Wrestling and Pro Wrestling FREEDOMS, though he wouldn't find much success there as opposed to in his home region of Osaka. All Japan Pro-Wrestling (2014-2017)
Hikari Tomizawa made his debut for All Japan Pro-Wrestling when he was announced for the 2014 Jr. Battle of Glory. He competed in the B Block where he scored victories over Sushi and Yoshinobu Kanemaru, but was defeated by Masaaki Mochizuki and Soma Takao, preventing him from advancing to the final at just four points.Tomizawa continued to compete for All Japan Pro-Wrestling following his performance in the league, where he joined the EVOLUTION stable and regularly competed in tag matches alongside his partners, earning a mixed win/loss record with no standout victories. Tomizawa competed for AJPW gold for the first time on July 27th as a part of Summer Action Series 2014, where he unsuccessfully challenged Atsushi Aoki for the AJPW World Jr. Heavyweight Championship. Following the match, Tomizawa invited Aoki to join EVOLUTION and team alongside him, which Aoki accepted.
Beginning on October 8th, Tomizawa & Aoki entered into the 2014 Jr. Tag Battle of Glory. They finished with 5 points following two wins, a loss, and a draw in their opening match against Team Dream Futures. The two teams would compete again in the playoff match and emerge victorious, then rectify their only other tournament loss with a victory over Ultimo Dragon & Yoshinobu Kanemaru in the finals, winning the tournament. After their victory, Aoki offered Tomizawa a rematch for the AJPW World Jr. Heavyweight Championship, which took place on October 29th, with Tomizawa being defeated again. The pairing resumed their regular teaming to enter the 2014 Real World Tag League beginning on November 16th, but would finish with a poor record of only five points across their seven matches.Tomizawa entered his second Jr. Battle of Glory on February 7th, 2015, where he competed in the B Block once again. He scored his only victory over Soma Takao and went to a draw with Yoshinobu Kanemaru, along with a pair of losses to Kotaro Suzuki and Sushi to finish at just three points. Shortly after the tournament, Tomizawa issued a challenge to KENSO for the GAORA TV Championship, but would come up short once again. After months of drought, Tomizawa scored his first huge pinfall victory in over a year by pinning the reigning Jr. Heavyweight Champion, Kotaro Suzuki on the AJPW Dynamite Series 2015 tour. Suzuki met Tomizawa at the end of the tour with the championship on the line, where the challenger once again came up short challenging for the division's top prize.Later in the year, Tomizawa and Atsushi Aoki teamed up once again for the 2015 Jr. Tag Battle of Glory, where they were able to replicate their success and finish the block on six points, emerging as back-to-back champions of the tournament. In the following year's Jr. Battle of Glory, marking Tomizawa's two-year anniversary with the promotion, he entered the B Block once more. The tournament was downsized to four wrestlers per block, where Tomizawa reached three points with a win over Atsushi Maruyama, a loss to Ryuji Hijikata, and a draw with Kazuki Hashimoto. While he would not have advanced under normal circumstances, an injury to Hashimoto resulted in a playoff match between he and Maruyama, where Tomizawa defeated him once again to advance to the tournament final for the first time. He met his regular partner Atsushi Aoki in the final with the AJPW World Jr. Heavyweight Championship on the line, but he was defeated by Aoki for a third time.Hikari kept his head held high, but he swore to avenge the loss he faced on the biggest stage of his career. He deemed himself ready for that year's Dynamite Series, where he challenged Aoki on the second night of the tour, finally defeating him to win the AJPW World Jr. Heavyweight Championship, capturing singles gold for the first time in his career.Tomizawa made his first defence of the championship against Tatsuhito Takaiwa on July 14th. After the bout, he and Aoki set their sights on challenging for the All Asia Tag Team Championship for the first time together. The match took place at Big Japan Pro-Wrestling Ryogokutan, where the EVOLUTION duo defeated Yankee Two Kenju to win the gold, making Tomizawa a double champion in the process. The pairing successfully defended the gold twice before Tomizawa's next singles defence, where he met Soma Takao at DDT Ryogoku Peter Pan on August 28th. Takao earned the victory on his home turf, ending Tomizawa's reign after just 70 days.In spite of the loss, Tomizawa and Aoki successfully defended the All Asia Tag Team Championship twice more before entering their third consecutive Jr. Tag Battle of Glory. They finished at five points with victories over Black Tiger V & Takeshi Minamino and Fuminori Abe & Koji Iwamoto, a defeat to Axe Bombers, and a draw with Soma Takao & Yuma Aoyagi. The pairing met again in the tournament final, where Tomizawa avenged his title loss by pinning Takao to win EVOLUTION their third consecutive Jr. Tag Battle of Glory.Shortly following their tournament victory, Tomizawa and Aoki defended the All Asia Tag Team Championship in a losing effort to Atsushi Onita & Masanobu Fuchi, ending their reign after 126 days. Shortly following the loss, Hikari entered the upcoming Real World Tag League not with his regular partner, but with fellow EVOLUTION stablemate, Super Tiger. The change in pairing didn't go well for EVOLUTION, as Tomizawa & Tiger only scored a single win across their five matches, finishing on a measly two points. The 2017 Jr. Battle of Glory began on February 18th, 2017, where Tomizawa entered into the B Block for the fourth year in a row. A loss to Yohei Nakajima and a draw with Atsushi Maruyama started his tournament weakly, but back to back wins over Kazuhiro Tamura and Yuma Aoyagi allowed for Tomizawa to advance to the tournament final for the second year in a row. Unfortunately, he would be defeated by Koji Iwamoto via referee decision, keeping him from winning the tournament once again. After his loss, Tomizawa announced that he was departing All Japan Pro-Wrestling to take a self-imposed excursion to Mexico.Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide (2017-2020)
Tomizawa made his debut for Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide on March 12th, only a few weeks after his departure from AJPW. While in AAA, he competed as the masked persona La Conejo, translating to "The Rabbit". In his debut match, he teamed with El Hijo del Fantasma & Pimpinela Escarlata to defeat Dave The Clown, Mamba, and Super Fly in trios action. The following month, Conejo had his first championship opportunity in AAA, teaming with Bengala to unsuccessfully challenge La Secta for the AAA World Tag Team Championship.Despite the loss, Conejo & Bengala continued to team together, where they would again challenge for the AAA World Tag Team CHampionship in a four-way match at Verano De Escandalo on June 4th, but would again come up short. After the match, Conejo and Bengala had a falling out, leading to a singles match where Conejo emerged victorious. After middling success following his win, Conejo challeneged Lanzeloth for the AAA World Cruiserweight Championship on November 3rd, but would come up short in his effort. Not content with his defeat, Conejo challenged again just shy of three months later, putting his mask on the line against Lanzeloth's championship. The match took place at Guerra De Titanes 2018 on January 27th, where Conejo retained his mask and won the championship.Conejo mounted his first successful defence with the gold on February 9th, defending against El Hijo del Vikingo, then later defeating Lanzeloth in a rematch for the gold on May 31st. Conejo next defended on August 9th in an eight-way match, before he would lose the title sixteen days later in a four-way match at TripleMania XXVI, being defeated but not pinned by Sammy Guevara.Beginning on November 14th, Conejo competed in AAA's Lucha Capital tournament, where he defeated Taya Valkyrie in the opening round, then defeated Laredo Kid in the second round. He would fall to Pentagon Jr. in the Semifinal, keeping him away from victory. On May 19th, 2019, Conejo earned #1 contendership for the AAA Latin American Championship by winning a five-way match also consisting of Myzteziz Jr., Flamita, Golden Magic, and Villano III Jr. He would come up short in his eventual challenge for the title, before turning his attention to the AAA World Mixted Tag Team Championship. He challenged for the title alongside Vanilla in a four-way match at TripleMania XXVII, where they would come up short to Lady Maravilla & Villano III Jr. Conejo next challenged for AAA gold on December 14th at Guerra De Titanes 2019, where he teamed with Rey Horus to unsuccessfuly challenge for the AAA World Tag Team Championship in a three-way match.Conejo did not much of note for the following months, until his excursion was cut short by the global pandemic in early 2020. He opted to return home rather than continue to compete in Mexico, but first chose to compete in a Luchas de Aspuestas match against his recent partner, Rey Horus. He was defeated in the match, unmasking and revealing himself to be Hikari Tomizawa. This was his final apperance in AAA.Return to New Japan Pro-Wrestling (2020-present)
Tomizawa shockingly returned to NJPW at Sengoku Lord in Nagoya on July 25th, when the recently-crowned IWGP Heavyweight and Intercontinental Champion, EVIL re-introduced him as the next challenger for Hiromu Takahashi's IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Championship, marking the first time in over eight years that Tomizawa would be competing for New Japan Pro-Wrestling.Tomizawa competed alongside EVIL and the rest of Bullet Club in multi-man tag team matches leading into Summer Struggle in Jingu, debuting a new persona mimicking that of his career rival. He referred to himself as "Tomi-chan" and carried a stuffed rabbit with him to the ring that he named Gerald — a quite on-the-nose spoof of Takahashi's stuffed cat, Daryl. The pair would finally meet for the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Championship on August 29th, competing in a singles match for the first time since their days as young lions. Despite Takahashi's best efforts, outside interference from Bullet Club would result in Tomizawa winning his first IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Championship from his career rival, just over a month after his return to NJPW.Tomizawa made his first successful defence of the championship on November 7th at Power Struggle when he defeated Takahashi's L.I.J. stablemate, BUSHI, before entering into his first Best of the Super Jr. tournament as champion. Tomizawa joined the field alongside Robbie Eagles, Taiji Ishimori, Hiromu Takahashi, Ryusuke Taguchi, BUSHI, El Desperado, Yuya Uemura, DOUKI and Master Wato. He scored twelve points, his only three defeats coming from Eagles, Ishimori and Desperado, leading him to miss out on the final. The tournament would go on to be won by Hiromu Takahashi, who was 0 - 2 with Tomizawa since his return. The pair of opponents met again at Wrestle Kingdom 15 on January 4th, 2021, where Takahashi would finally usurp his rival and recapture the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Championship.Despite his loss to Takahashi, Tomi set his sights on capturing more IWGP gold as he teamed with fellow Bullet Club member Taiji Ishimori to defeat El Desperado & Yoshinobu Kanemaru on January 23rd, capturing his first IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag Team Championship. During the reign, Hiromu Takahashi vacated the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Championship due to injury, which would lead to Tomizawa spitefully taunting him over it. This drew the ire of Takahashi's L.I.J. teammate, BUSHI, as well as Takahashi's other career rival, El Desperado — leading to a three-way match for the vacant IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Championship at Castle Attack.Just three days before the event on a Road To Castle Attack show, Tomizawa & Ishimori would lose their IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag Team Championship back to Desperado & Kanemaru, ending their reign with the gold at only 33 days. Following this, Tomizawa was unsuccessful in capturing the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Championship in the three-way match as BUSHI was pinned by El Desperado.Tomizawa & Ishimori resumed teaming after the defeat, and would challenge the reigning IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag Team Champions, Roppongi 3K for a match on June 23rd at Kizuna Road, where he and Ishimori defeated Roppongi 3K to capture the gold. Not long after their win, Tomizawa would unite along with EVIL, Yujiro Takahashi and Dick Togo to form the House of Torture subfaction on the first night of Wrestle Grand Slam in MetLife Dome on September 4th. He and Ishimori's reign would come to an end the following night, losing the titles to El Desperado & Yoshinobu Kanemaru for a second time.Beginning on November 13th, Tomizawa entered his second Best of the Super Jr. tournament. He competed in the single block of twelve alongside Robbie Eagles, SHO, YOH, Taiji Ishimori, Hiromu Takahashi, Ryusuke Taguchi, BUSHI, El Desperado, Yoshinobu Kanemaru, DOUKI and Master Wato. Tomizawa placed fourth overall at twelve points, his five losses coming to Eagles, YOH, BUSHI, Kanemaru and Wato, which would prevent him from making the finals.Following El Desperado's successful defence of the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Championship at Hyper Battle 2022, Tomizawa would attack the champion after the match, holding up the title and informally challenging him for Wrestling Dontaku. In their match, Tomizawa successfully defeated Desperado with the aid of House of Torture, capturing the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Championship for a second time.Beginning on May 15th, Tomizawa entered into his third Best of the Super Jr. tournament, and his second as champion. The tournament had returned to the two block format, where Tomizawa joined the A Block alongside Ace Austin, Alex Zayne, Clark Connors, Francesco Akira, Hiromu Takahashi, Ryusuke Taguchi, SHO, YOH and Yoshinobu Kanemaru. He would sit at the top of the block on the final night at twelve points, his only losses coming from Austin and Kanemaru, before being defeated by Hiromu Takahashi as well in the block-deciding matchup against his rival.Takahashi went on to win the tournament and would challenge Tomizawa on a New Japan Road event, where Tomizawa would overcome his rival and for the first time against Takahashi, retain the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Championship. After the match, Tomizawa was confronted by a returning KUSHIDA, eventually leading to a match for the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Championship on the Burning Spirit tour. To the shock of many, Tomizawa retained over KUSHIDA. He would go on to defend his championship once more at NJPW Royal Quest II in October, defeating CHAOS member Connor Aspen in his home country of England.Tomizawa missed the 2022 edition of Super Jr. Tag League due to his duties as IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Champion, though he had secured a 4-Way match for the title at Wrestle Kingdom 17 between himself, El Desperado, Hiromu Takahashi and Master Wato. The match arguably stole the show for many, but Tomizawa would lose his championship without being pinned as Takahashi scored the victory over Master Wato. Bitter that he had lost without being defeated, Tomizawa would immediately hunt for a rematch at The New Beginning in Sapporo, but would come up short to Takahashi and fail to recapture the gold.Tomizawa entered into the 2023 Best of the Super Jr. tournament's A Block beginning on May 12th, where he competed against DOUKI, Hiromu Takahashi, KUSHIDA, Lio Rush, Ryusuke Taguchi, KAZUKI, Taiji Ishimori, Titán and TJP. He would score a very impressive 14 points, topping the block with his only defeats coming to KUSHIDA and Ishimori. However, he would unfortunately fall in the Semifinals to B Block's Master Wato, keeping him from winning Best of the Super Jr. despite a dominant performance. After floating around the card and assisting in the matches of his fellow House of Torture stablemates throughout most of 2023, Tomizawa entered into the 2023 Super Jr. Tag League where he teamed alongside the newest House of Torture member, Yoshinobu Kanemaru. They competed against YOH & Musashi, Intergalactic Jet Setters, Ryusuke Taguchi & The DKC, El Desperado & Master Wato, DOUKI & TAKA Michinoku, BUSHI & Titán, Robbie Eagles & Kosei Fujita, Catch 2/2, and Bullet Club War Dogs. Tomizawa and Kanemaru finished at twelve points, their only defeats coming to Bushi & Titán, Eagles & Fujita and Catch 2/2. They advanced to the finals, where they would come up short against Catch 2/2 once again.During the World Tag League tour, Tomizawa supported EVIL and Yujiro Takahashi in multi-man tag team matches, during which they were briefly joined by The Gates of Agony, but that was only a ruse much to the disappointment of Tomizawa. However, House of Torture would gain an additional member as on the final night of tournament, Shota Umino was turned on by his partner, Ren Narita, who officially aligned himself with the villainous group.
For the following months, Tomizawa teamed alongside EVIL and the rest of House of Torture through their leader's feud with Tama Tonga. But on February 23rd, House of Torture shockingly interfered in CHAOS member KAZUKI's IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Championship match against El Desperado, allowing KAZUKI to capture the championship and officially align himself with House of Torture as well.In the months that followed, Tomizawa grew incredibly attached to KAZUKI, who would quickly become his best friend and regular tag team partner. The pairing teamed with their leader, EVIL in the mini-tournament to crown new NEVER Openweight 6-Man Tag Team Champions on April 14th in Taiwan, but after cheating their way through the opening round against Los Ingobernables de Japón's BUSHI, Shingo Takagi and Yota Tsuji, they were defeated in the final by Hiroshi Tanahashi, Oleg Boltin and Toru Yano, where Tomizawa was pinned.Following the defeat, the House of Torture lineup of EVIL, Yujiro Takahashi and Hikari Tomizawa would challenge the new champions during the Wrestling Dontaku tour, but they were once again defeated, this time with Takahashi being pinned. Following the loss, Tomizawa entered into that year's Best of the Super Jr. 31, where he competed in the B Block. Cheating his way through most of the tournament, Tomizawa picked up victories over DOUKI, Dragon Dia, Robbie Eagles, Ninja Mack, Drilla Moloney, KAZUKI and Hiromu Takahashi, with his only defeats coming to Francesco Akira and KUSHIDA, finishing his block at the very top with 14 points. Tomizawa met El Desperado in the semifinals, where he was finally eliminated from the tournament. The winner of the tournament, Jamie Barlow defeated KAZUKI on June 16th at New Japan SOUL, marking the end of his reign and causing great heartbreak for Tomizawa. In an attempt to get revenge for his fallen comrade, Tomizawa challenged Barlow for the championship on July 5th, but his challenge was unsuccessful, and House of Torture would have to go back to the drawing board. As Power Struggle and the Super Jr. Tag League were on the horizon, Tomizawa and KAZUKI vowed to team up for the first time and run a perfect block through the tournament with their tag team expertise! Entering into the A Block, the tournament began on October 24th, where they used nefarious means to defeat Bullet Club War Dogs, Tigre Suicida, Skateboard Bros., BUSHI & Hiromu Takahashi, and Ichiban Sweet Boys to fulfill their promise and advance from the block undefeated. They met Catch 2/2 in the final in a similar scene from Tomizawa's tournament final the year prior, where they would debut their new tag team finisher, "Fuck (opponent name)" to great success, pinning TJP for the tournament victory.
